Settling In and Unpacking

Last night was our first night in the new house. I excavated the kitchen, which had been completely full of boxes stacked 5-6' high, while Forrest set up the new TV and other assorted electronics.

We didn’t discover until the morning that the propane heater in the bedroom is programmable, so the temperature was a little warmer than is good for sleeping. That was in marked contrast to how chilly the living room area is, where the only heat source is a wood-burning stove that’s currently buried behind more stacks of boxes. It’s so cold in the mornings, I wanted a snuggie! (Psst, Mom, got any fleece and a need for a new project? ;))

Tonight I emptied a bunch of boxes from the bedroom. So now I can get to my side of the bed normally, instead of crawling over to my side or snaking through the box-canyon. (Teehee, no pun intended.)

I can also confirm that the shower in the master bedroom suite works, although the controls are fiddly and weird, and we really need to figure out how to rig a shower curtain around a jacuzzi bathtub corner shower stall…

Today's Tweets

What I had to say

  • It amuses me that the Internet has named the super-annoying trends bar for the new Twitter iPhone app: #dickbar [12:27 PM]
  • #flteach question: I'm a self-teaching S. Read a kid's book, got gist. Now what? Re-read? Exercises? (Like what?) Summarize? New book? Help! [ 3:24 PM]
  • I'd forgotten how great DDR is as exercise. High aerobic activity == lots of calories burned. Fun == lots of time at it. Double win! [ 5:31 PM]

  • Plan for today: unpack boxes. Lots of boxes. #omgsomanyboxes http://t.co/Fb4eToc [ 2:50 PM]
  • The cats, on the other hand, like all the boxes: great for stalking and slinking and other cat-appropriate activities. [ 5:08 PM]

Tweet Posts: Good or Bad?

I started my automatic tweet round-up posts for two reasons: 1) to have all my info backed up and in one place, and 2) to let my older ;) friends in on my internet-doings (some of them read my blog but don't have and don't want Twitter accounts).

But I dislike how the "Today's Tweets" blog post title is spamming the list of recent posts. And it is duplicated info for my friends who do have Twitter accounts. And I will probably make my own "me on the web" consolidation page that I'll have full control over.

So what do you guys think? Do you like the new Twitter posts? Or do you think they're spammy and should die a big, horrible death?

Memorizing Info about German Words

Learning yesterday about the existence of German single-object transitive verbs that take the dative case, rather than accusative, forced me to update my flashcards to add a note to these “exceptional” verbs.

There are apparently several things about German words that just have to be memorized:

  • verbs:
    • accusative or dative case (for its direct object)
    • weak, irregular, or strong (for simple past tense and past participle)
    • stem-changing
  • nouns:
    • masculine, feminine, or neuter gender
    • plural form
    • genitive form

I’m sure there are more things that need to be memorized, but I haven’t been exposed to them yet. :P
