100% interpersonal, 120% visual, 80% verbal, and 100% mathematical

Congratulations on being 400% smart! Actually, on my test, everyone is. The above score breaks down what kind of thinking you most enjoy doing. A score above 100% means you use that kind of thinking more than average, and a score below 100% means you use it less. It says nothing about how good you are at any one, just how interested you are in each, relatively. A substantial difference in scores between two people means, conclusively, that they are different kinds of thinkers.

And their advice WRT other people's scores:

  1. Don't date someone if your interpersonal percentages differ by more than 80%.
  2. Don't be friends with someone if your verbal percentages differ by more than 100%.
  3. Don't have sex with someone if their math percentage is over 200%.

I cackle at Jerry and Aaron's 280% math. ;) Test is here.

Forrest Drinking with a Straw

With his tooth missing, Forrest has resorted to drinking with a straw. Of course, that doesn't begin to excuse anyone from drinking Manischewitz wine through a straw, Jewish or no.

Safety-Conscious Aaron

On the ride back from Blockbuster, Aaron tried to steal Forrest's seat. Aaron ended up like this — but he does have his seatbelt on!

What the deuce?

Like the stork bringing babies, Forrest has been blessed with much cuscus from the cuscus goose.

The cuscus goose is obviously loose with his cuscus. One might deduce he's a recluse named Bruce, who enjoys juice and mousse with his cuscus (though from what one deduced that, I don't know). I heard the cuscus goose once tried to seduce an obtuse moose; luckily, they didn't reproduce.

I must apologize. For letting this post go on so long, I have no excuse. Can't stand this anymore? Here's a noose. Now vamoose, by Zeus!

With thanks (or abuse :)) to RhymeZone.

New Laptop & Tim's Internship

I write this post from my shiny new laptop, a relatively tiny machine at 12.1" and 4.1 lbs (especially compared to Tim's crazy 17", 10 lb creature). I'd been seriously contemplating getting a laptop for a few months now, and two weeks ago I finally decided on buying one from Tiger Direct.

They were friendly people, even after Wells Fargo had issues with my credit card. My laptop arrived on time and worked out of the box. Yay! Only problem with it is the left arrow key is on slightly skewed — I'll call them tomorrom and see what can be done about it, short of sending it back to them.

In other exciting news, Tim got his game programming internship! And he thought his interview didn't go well. :)

Roasting Marshmellows

That's me, attempting to roast a marshmellow.

It's exceptionally difficult to get a nicely toasted marshmellow from a roaring bonfire. I tried to scoot some embers away, but they went out quickly, so I had to pretty much leave them where they fell. I'm shielding my face as much as possible from the bonfire; it was frickin' hot.

The Gang at a Bonfire

My friend Olya visited, and we all took her out to a beach bonfire.

In order, from left to right: Jerry, Olya, me, Forrest, Aaron, Joe, Tim, and the bonfire. :)

Inconsistency of Tagging on del.icio.us

The taggers at del.icio.us don't seem to be very consistent in whether they favor singular or plural nouns, or abbreviations or full words. Of the common similar tags used, I gathered this data:

Singular
article, blog, computer, download, forum, photo, tutorial
Plural
books, extensions, games, hacks, maps, resources, tags, tools
Abbreviated
tech
Full
development, information

Now, it makes sense that article, blog, forum, and tutorial should be singular — you more often see pages that are a single instance, rather than a collection, of these things, although article and tutorial could be argued. On the other hand, you don't usually see pages that are about just one computer — you find things about a whole line of computers, or using computers in general. And why does tech get to be abbreviated, but the other terms don't? I would expect info to be more likely abbreviated, but I would be wrong.

What del.icio.us needs is to provide a better way of seeing what other people have used as tags, or to come up with an official policy (the way Wikipedia prefers singulars to plurals), or to implemente a way of linking essentially identical tags together. Until then, the tag-synonomy will continue. :(

Did I Beat Forrest?

Latest I've been up in a long time, at least for non-school related reasons. I did create a modified Memetrack Greasemonkey script...

Memetrack

The Memetrack-added information is the "del.icio.us: 1278" blue box in the bottom right corner.

I created a modified Memetrack Greasemonkey script that displays how many people are watching a particular site via Bloglines and del.icio.us. I didn't add any functionality, just made it prettier. I can only guarantee it to work for Firefox 1.0 on Linux, as that's what I use, but any CSS-compliant browser should do.

Arrrrrrrrgh! :(

I didn't even hear my 10 o'clock alarm this morning. A rush of adrenaline from looking at the clock isn't that fun first thing in the morning. I had a midterm at noon today, and I slept through it. At least this prof lets students take one make-up midterm ("for any reason," whew) directly after the final. So that's what I'll be doing... :(

The Space Needle

My fiancé and I wandered about the area around the Space Needle in Seattle, Washington during the last day of our trip on Microsoft's dime.

Olya Visiting, and Split Infinitives

Yay, my best friend from high school should be visiting me this weekend. I already visited her college, so now she owes me one. Plans are in the making for a beach bonfire Friday night and making her a one-shot character for 7th Sea on Sunday. Saturday is Open House, during which time the PolyBemani club will be offering free DDR. I'll have to show her around downtown and such. Not sure if she's interested and driving out to the beaches other than for the bonfire that we'd better have (*glares at local friends*).

Any other suggestions for what to do with her? (Taunting mercilessly is understood. ;))

Now for something completely different: the so-called split infinitive. From Language Log:

The split infinitive is not the bane of English teachers. No sensible English teacher cares one whit about the split infinitive.
Poor Mrs. Furstenthal. Wonder how much she dislikes descriptive linguists? Or perhaps she just figures high schoolers, even honors students, can't handle being told that something can be grammatical but still not suited to a particular dialect (in this case, standard written academic English)? Oh well.

Don't they look like candles?

More web surfing, more coolness discovered. Too bad these rechargeable lamps are so expensive -- almost $80 for 4.

Strawbale Surfing

I was shocked to discover the dearth of strawbale links on del.icio.us, so I went surfing about to rectify the situation. I stumbled across an awesome site I'd never seen before: Glen Hunter & Joanne Sokolowski's blog of their strawbale home.

Other random things I discovered:

  • Phil and Lisa Malone's site about their house is cool in and of itself, but I found their concrete staining with Kemiko beautiful. I no longer have reservations about wanting radiant floor heating in a concrete slab, which I had had mixed feelings about due of my previous belief in their "inherent" ugliness.
  • Rubberwood, discussed at Metaefficient and some furniture seller's site.
  • Design company J-Me has some random but cool modern design stuff. I really like the coasters!
  • A pretty stone lamp that diffuses light nicely. I think it would work better at a much smaller scale than their suggested nightstand, though. Such a thing shouldn't be too hard to make yourself...
  • Found an interesting wirey plastic shoe that perhaps my shoe-fiend sister might like.

Mmm, structs...

Is it bad that I'm starting to think that structs look pretty? At least that's better than thinking them tasty, right?

Annotated Photo of Walnut Creek

This region encompasses my junior high years.

In case you don't know yet, Google added satellite images to their maps site. The latest fad is annotating a map, so I had some fun playing along. You'll have to click on the image and view my annotations at Flickr's site itself.
